E-mobility safety reforms welcomed for Scenic Rim

Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause has welcomed new recommendations from a full parliamentary inquiry into personal mobility devices (PMDs), saying that they reflect the growing safety concerns in the Scenic Rim.

“I can certainly relate to the safety concerns for all parties: the riders, pedestrians, and others who are adversely affected,” he said. “These recommendations are about ensuring PMD users ride responsibly and keeping our communities safe.”

The committee recommendations include:

  • Introducing a minimum riding age of 16+ and licensing requirements (learners)
  • Amending laws so riders of e-bikes and other personal mobility devices can be tested for alcohol or drugs
  • Providing new powers for authorities to seize, impound and destroy illegal devices
  • Allowing penalties for riders aged 16 and 17, and enabling authorities to pursue parents or guardians when riders are under 16
  • Introducing anti-tampering penalties and clearer requirements for retailers
  • Creating a new offence for riding without due care and attention around pedestrians, including a 10km/h speed limit on footpaths

Over 1,200 submissions were received by the parliamentary committee in developing these recommendations. Constituents are now invited to complete a survey and share whether they agree with the recommendations via https://listen2qld.com/e-mobility-safety?r=f

“We’ve seen an increasing use of e-bikes and e-scooters across the Scenic Rim, and these reforms aim to ensure they are used safely. I encourage everyone to have their say through the survey,” Mr Krause said.

The LNP Crisafulli Government will work quickly to respond to the recommendations so that we can restore safety where we live.
