The LNP Government has launched a Parliamentary Inquiry into Queensland’s Container Refund Scheme to boost recycling rates and put more refunds in Queenslanders’ pockets.
The scheme, administered by Container Exchange, has a legislated target container return rate of 85 per cent but, despite more Queenslanders returning their eligible items, the return rate has continually fallen well short of that target.
The inquiry will examine the current state and operation of the scheme, and its efficiency and effectiveness in delivering on its legislative objectives.
Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, said the inquiry, to be conducted by the Government’s Health, Environment and Innovation Committee, would help identify how the scheme could be improved.
“We need to understand why the scheme has fallen short of its targets under the former government and how it can be improved to deliver more benefits for Queenslanders,” he said.
“The Inquiry will assess the availability of refund points across the State to help boost Queenslanders’ access.”
Closing date for submissions is 4 April. The inquiry will deliver its report by August 21.
