35 Years in the Making: Biddaddaba To Get Gravel Road Sealed

It should not have taken this long!

A lot can happen in 35 years…but since 1989, despite the thousands of road projects the State of Queensland undertook in that time, there was no bitumen put on Beaudesert Nerang Road at Biddaddaba

In a terrific win for the community, all of our work fighting for funding has seen a $5.2m allocation of money to seal the gravel section at Biddaddaba as part of the 2024 Queensland Budget.

For over three decades, the community at Biddaddaba and surrounding districts have campaigned for the much-needed upgrade of a stretch of Beaudesert Nerang Road. This gravel stretch has remained unchanged since the 1980s, despite the area’s development and increased traffic from both residents and tourists.

The Biddaddaba Creek Action Group (BCAG) has been at the forefront of this advocacy, writing letters and bringing their concerns to several governments and Ministers for Main Roads to address the deteriorating conditions of this route. I want to extend my thanks to the BCAG for their dedication and persistence throughout these years. Pleas for improvements here seemed to fall on deaf ears until now.

As a candidate back in 2011, I first met with the community and listened to their case for upgrading the road. Despite a commitment from the LNP government in 2014-15, the project was unfortunately scrapped when there was a change in government in 2015.

Since then, my campaign – and the community’s – has gone on. I’ve made it a priority to raise this issue at almost every meeting with Main Roads, advocating for the design and funding necessary to finally move forward.

It’s gratifying to see that these efforts have culminated in a $5.2 million allocation in the latest Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) to bitumen a significant section of Beaudesert-Nerang Road. While this funding is a positive step forward, it’s clear that this overdue action should not have taken 35 years to materialise.

When President of Biddaddaba Creek Action Group, George Massam found out about the upgrades he said he’ll believe it when he sees it! And I agree… I will remain committed to ensuring accountability in the timely delivery of this project.

Here are the project details from TMR:

Beaudesert–Nerang Road (Biddaddaba) reshape and seal previously unsealed section (QTRIP ID 2340521)

•The purpose of the project is to improve safety by reshaping and sealing the unsealed gravel section of Beaudesert–Nerang Road between Mundoolun Connection Road in Wonglepong and Biddaddaba Road in Biddaddaba. Works will start at the intersection with Elysian Fields equestrian facility heading west towards Biddaddaba Road. To improve sight visibility for motorists, modification to the crest at the top of the hill will be required, along with tree clearing, vegetation and formalised line marking.

•Early works are expected to commence in late July 2024. These works involve the relocation of the National Broadband Network (NBN) assets. Energex relocations are planned to commence in late October 2024. Project works are anticipated to commence from November 2024, subject to weather, contractor availability and the completion of the early works.

•More information will be provided to you and local residents prior to works commencing.
