State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, is calling on the State Labor Government to act now to improve safety at Woodhill State School as it considers a development application for a service station next to Woodhill State School.
“There are ongoing issues with traffic congestion around Woodhill State School on the Mount Lindesay Highway – this school is next to the relevant site of the development application,” Mr Krause said.
“Many parents have contacted me concerned about the proposed development and I have raised the issue with Transport and Main Roads and Education Queensland on several occasions.”
“In both morning and afternoon peaks, especially at the end of the day, safety issues arise as cars are banked on the highway trying to access the carpark at Woodhill State School. With cars parked on both sides of the exits, this section of the Mount Lindesay Highway becomes dangerous as parents are forced to park past the designated exit point on the south side of the school.”
In a letter to the Government, Mr Krause said that the issues exist at the school because there is not enough room in the ‘Stop, Drop and Go’ area and there is a major lack of parking for a school the size of Woodhill.
“Parents simply have no other choice than to queue on the highway to access the ‘Stop, Drop and Go’ zone inside the school.”
Mr Krause has implored TMR and EQ to look closely at these issues because the situation during peak times is clearly dangerous, and with more development proposed nearby – with more kids, more cars, and more traffic on the highway – the situation at the school will only deteriorate.
“The Government has a prime opportunity right now to see what can be done to improve this issue overall and act accordingly. Let’s see if the State Labor Government listens to concerns of residents in the Scenic Rim community or neglects us like we’ve seen so many times before when it comes to adequate funding for road infrastructure.”
“We need the Government to work with the community to bust congestion and I will continue to make representations on behalf of the school and broader community to keep our children and all road users safe,” Mr Krause said.
