On 5 March 2024 I tabled a petition on behalf of 1,369 constituents, urging the Government to address the pressing need for an upgrade to the intersection of the Cunningham Highway and Ipswich-Rosewood Road at Amberley, known as the “Amberley Interchange.”
For over 25 years, this interchange has been identified as requiring an upgrade. In 2018, the LNP Federal Government allocated $170 million towards its upgrade. However, despite this funding, the Queensland Labor Government scrapped the project. It still has not put it back on the agenda.
This is a disgraceful situation from the Queensland Labor Government.
Recently, the Department of Transport & Main Roads proposed a roundabout as an interim solution following community consultations in 2022. But this proposal would exacerbate existing issues, including traffic congestion and safety concerns for heavy vehicles.
The Queensland Government’s recent community consultation report indicates a further delay in progress, suggesting only short-term safety treatments at the intersection. This delay is unacceptable, and it underscores the need for urgent action to address the long-standing issues at the Amberley Interchange.
The disregard for the Ipswich community’s safety and efficiency on our roads is evident in the failure to implement necessary upgrades despite available funding. It is imperative that the Queensland Government reinstates the project, designs a comprehensive solution, and secures funding for its construction without further delay.
The residents of Ipswich and all users of the Cunningham Highway deserve safe and efficient infrastructure, and it’s time for the government to prioritise their needs.
