I was delighted to attend the opening of the new “Possum Hut” pavilion, perfectly timed for the Canungra Show on August 24. After over 15 years without a dedicated space, this new pavilion marks a significant milestone for the Canungra Fine Arts Committee.
Named in memory of the old pavilion, which was dismantled in the early 2000s due to damage and pest issues, the new Possum Hut is located between the old toilet block and the green shed at the Canungra Show Grounds. The pavilion features a unique carved stump by Matt Bird, showcasing local wildlife, which will be displayed at the front of the building.
The journey to rebuild was challenging. Original plans were stalled by funding issues, but with the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program, a grant was secured in February 2022. Despite rising construction costs and regulatory hurdles, the Canungra Sport and Recreation Association (CSRA) contributed to cover additional expenses.
The Possum Hut is designed to be a community resource center and will support local groups like the Canungra Crafters and the Canungra History Association. It will also serve as a vibrant venue for the annual Canungra Show.
The new pavilion represents a bright new chapter for Canungra, celebrating our town’s resilience and community spirit.
