Australians receive more shipping and package delivery scams than any other scam, according to recent research commissioned by Australia Post.
This research showed that:
- 73 per cent of Australians have received a fake delivery or package scam message
- more than half of those surveyed admitted to initially believing a fake delivery message was genuine
- 27 per cent of respondents had fallen victim to a scam, with five per cent reporting that they had lost more than $20,000 to scammers
Australia Post’s position as a trusted national brand makes it a prime target for scammers using fake parcel delivery SMS to request financial and personal information from Australian consumers.
It has launched a Scams Awareness Campaign to encourage Australians to download the AusPost app to safely track their parcels and manage deliveries.
“This is an ongoing campaign, with advertisements continuing throughout the year across various channels,” said an Australia Post spokesperson.
