In a recent development concerning a proposed solar project spanning hundreds of hectares, local residents have banded together to voice their concerns and demand greater consultation in decision-making processes. The project, slated for Lower Mount Walker in southeast Queensland, has sparked a wave of activism driven by fears of its potential impact on the region’s farming land.
Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause commended the proactive stance taken by residents, acknowledging their apprehensions regarding the project’s implications. “I commend 100 percent, and congratulate, the dozens of locals who have come together in action – even before this solar project has been formally submitted to the council.”
While the current Government continues to push renewable energy projects, there’s a growing sentiment that the current rules and regulations for these projects lack sufficient consideration for local communities and their concerns.
Mr Krause highlighted the disconnect between the massive investments in renewables and the ongoing rise in energy prices. “The billions invested in renewables has not stopped prices continually soaring,” he said, pointing out the financial strain faced by consumers despite the shift towards cleaner energy sources.
The lack of consultation with affected residents underscores a broader issue with the regulation of renewable energy projects. Under existing laws, projects like the proposed solar installation in Lower Mount Walker can proceed without direct input from the community regarding its potential impact. Mr Krause emphasised the need for a more balanced approach that considers both the potential benefits of renewable energy and the preservation of valuable farming land. “Lower Mount Walker, like so much of the Scenic Rim electorate, is terrific farming country. If solar installations are going to be permitted there, where will it end?”
