Visit to Boonah and Tamborine Mountain Schools

I want to say how much I enjoyed my recent visits to Tamborine Mountain State School and All Saints School Boonah.

At Tamborine Mountain I enjoyed talking to more than 100 Year Fives. I was asked a wide range of questions and was impressed with how much they have already learned about the Australian system of government.

Being able to stand in front of them and talk about my role in representing them and trying to resolve issues of concern around Tamborine Mountain was, I hope, a good experience for everyone.

At All Saints I spoke to Grades Three, Four and Five students and then invited their questions. It was gratifying to be able to answer individual questions about local issues and to elaborate on how our Australian system of government works.

The students clearly had done a lot of background work which was obvious from the questions they asked.

I thank both schools for the opportunity to visit them and to speak, however briefly, to their students on the role of government in Australia.

I was able to follow up my visits to the schools the following week by welcoming 25 Grade Five and Six students from All Saints during their visit to Parliament House which they followed up with a visit to the nearby heritage-listed Brisbane Synagogue.

It was a real pleasure to welcome them to Parliament, and I enjoyed their participation in a parliamentary role-play in the old Legislative Chamber, in which they considered the proposition “Students Do At Least An Hour of Homework at Night.”
