Questions are being asked about a school bus route from Canungra State School that travels along busy Upper Coomera Road as the bus currently must reverse into oncoming traffic on Bracken Court, off Limerick Drive, to turn around.
Concerned parents have been in contact with TransLink and recently contacted State Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause.
“Parents of students and residents alike cannot understand why a school bus must turn around at an intersection instead of driving less than one kilometre further along the road to turn around in a cul-de-sac,” Mr Krause said.
“I have spoken to parents who have been in contact with TransLink and were told that extensions to bus runs are only considered when the minimum distance of extension is at least 1.6km.”
“As resident’s on Limerick Drive have said – with this rule, the bus route will never qualify for an extension as it is less than one kilometre from Bracken Court to the end of Limerick Drive.”
“This is about the safety of our children – I have spoken to residents who have told me that when the bus reverses into Bracken Court to turn around, traffic is held up along Limerick Drive and makes it very difficult to park vehicles safely to pick-up and drop-off students.”
Mr Krause said that on top of the difficulties parents have parking their vehicles, children then must navigate between the bus and oncoming traffic when they are dropped off and picked up in the afternoon.
“It is a dangerous situation for all involved and I have called on the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to investigate this issue and allow the bus route extension at this particular location.” Mr Krause said that he is yet to receive a response from the Minister regarding the issue.
